My AP Economics teacher asked the following question and I can’t come up with an answer:
Have you ever seen an employee who added nothing to the productvity of a business? Why do you suppose such workers are sometimes hired?
No, it has nothing to do with affirmative action.
Tax credits. I worked for a major company and was in the H.R. department. We had a list of sorts to hire from first. On it, was a list of "types of people" who would be more desirable to hire for the tax credit. There were points given and if we could hire someone with a combo of requirements, all the better.
Some of the qualifications were: Formerly on welfare, Formerly incarcerated, Former drug addict, Mentally ill or disabled in some way, English as a Second language.
The company’s thoughts were, "If they don’t work out, we get rid of them at the 89th day." (90 day probationary period) I will add that it was a quite technical job, so many contributed little to nothing and didn’t make it past the 90th day. We actually found one "Former drug addict" had found a shift in the load in a truck and tucked himself in for a nap. We found him when the truck was unloaded.

Hope you enjoy the music, I find that it really does help me focus and get more done during my day when I break up my tasks into little bit sized chunks. If you seriously apply this, I believe that you will get more work done in less amount of time because you are focusing your energy into one thing at a time.

For our business, we have employees who work in and out of the office. Their work requires them to schedule people to work, so they are either on the phone or on the computer. It is different from a call center where the calls are all inbound. They could be on some of our search sites, sending emails, making phone calls, entering information, etc… Right now, they are on the honor system for tracking their hours and we try to judge it by productivity, but that is not the most efficient system. We would like to have some way for them to clock in online. Does anyone have any suggestions for tracking this type of work?
Simple! A central office with employees in 1 location is really cheap and relatively easy to set up. Then like other businesses, you know your employees are working. If you don’t want to pay for an office (generally cheap and easy to set up) it doesn’t seem fair to spy on your employees at home. But I’m old fashioned about job laws and rules.

I am looking for tips/opportunities to improve employee productivity and cost saving tips in large a agricultural-based business.Ideas that are not capital intensive.
Look for duplication of employee effort and paperwork. Look to the old IE standbys of combining jobs, reducing travel by placing common processes close to each other, streamline processes, reduce waiting time. Look to the old 80:20 rule. 20% of the work takes 80% of the time so concentrate on these labour intensive areas.
