Easy Tech Software Corp. is evaluating the production of a new software product to compete with the popular word processing software currently available. Annual fixed costs of producing the item are estimated at $150,000 and the variable cost is $10 per unit. The current selling price of the item is $35 per unit, and the annual sales volume is estimated at 50,000 units.

A. Easy Tech is considering adding new equipment that would improve software quality. The negative aspect of this new equipment would be an increase in both fixed and variable costs. Annual fixed costs would increase by $50,000 and variable costs by $3. However, marketing expects the better-quality product to increase demand to 70,000 units. Should Easy-Tech purchase this new equipment and keep the price of their product the same? Explain your reasoning.

How can my business keep track of home hours for our employees?

For our business, we have employees who work in and out of the office. Their work requires them to schedule people to work, so they are either on the phone or on the computer. It is different from a call center where the calls are all inbound. They could be on some of our search sites, sending emails, making phone calls, entering information, etc… Right now, they are on the honor system for tracking their hours and we try to judge it by productivity, but that is not the most efficient system. We would like to have some way for them to clock in online. Does anyone have any suggestions for tracking this type of work?

Simple! A central office with employees in 1 location is really cheap and relatively easy to set up. Then like other businesses, you know your employees are working. If you don’t want to pay for an office (generally cheap and easy to set up) it doesn’t seem fair to spy on your employees at home. But I’m old fashioned about job laws and rules.

I am looking for tips/opportunities to improve employee productivity and cost saving tips in large a agricultural-based business.Ideas that are not capital intensive.

Look for duplication of employee effort and paperwork. Look to the old IE standbys of combining jobs, reducing travel by placing common processes close to each other, streamline processes, reduce waiting time. Look to the old 80:20 rule. 20% of the work takes 80% of the time so concentrate on these labour intensive areas.
